Company History - Systems Management & Balancing Inc. | Iowa Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning

Company History

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. was originally incorporated in 1967 by Einar Dahl, Jr. and headquartered in a 180 square foot office in the old AIB building at 10th and Grand in Des Moines, IA.

The mission of the company was to provide an independent, objective and professional test of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.  Included in these tests are air and water balance, sound and vibration measurements, building surveys, control verification, fume hood testing, duct air leakage testing, cooling tower performance testing and system commissioning.

The young company was purchased by Dean Jukam in February of 1970.

Dean graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering.  Prior to purchasing Systems Management & Balancing, Inc., Dean was a Trane sales engineer in the Des Moines office for six years.

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. became certified by the Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) as an independent testing agency in the fall of 1970.  Today, all eligible technicians have been tested and certified by AABC.  In addition, three employees are certified Test and Balance Engineers (TBE) and two are certified Commissioning Agents (CCA).

Wayne Tischhauser came to work with Dean the summer of 1971.  This marked the beginning of an exceptional friendship and working relationship.  Wayne was a major factor in the success of the company.

The first major project to be tested in the summer of 1970 was the new post office building at Second and University in Des Moines.  Many projects of various size and type have been completed throughout the years across the Midwest.

A branch office in Minneapolis, MN was established in 1974.  The primary market areas have been Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska; however, some testing has been conducted in about 30 other states.  One such test of interest was a cooling tower performance test at the site of the manned space shuttle launch pad, Cape Kennedy, Florida.

The Minneapolis branch office was sold in 2000 to a long time employee.

On October 1, 2002, James E. Hall purchased Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. from Dean.  Wayne retired in April, 2004.

Systems Management & Balancing, Inc. has grown over the years employing graduate engineers, field technicians and support staff located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Omaha.  The company has advanced from 180 square feet, pneumatic controls, squeeze bulbs, and oil filled manometers to 6000 square feet in a LEED™ registered facility located in Waukee, IA utilizing state of the art computers and instrumentation in testing sophisticated HVAC systems.
